Overview
On the particularly beautiful section of the Kungsleden from Saltoluokta to Kvikkjokk you spend five days in one of Scandinavia's most impressive natural landscapes – partly through Sarek National Park. You hike across plateaus with reindeer herds, climb Skierfe and look out over mountains, glaciers and the Rapa delta.
The Kungsleden trail in northern Sweden is one of Europe's most famous long-distance hiking trails and a true must-do for any hiking enthusiast. On the particularly beautiful section from Saltoluokta to Kvikkjokk, you'll spend five days hiking through one of Scandinavia's most breathtaking natural landscapes. The trail leads you partly through the legendary Sarek National Park, often called Europe's last wilderness. You'll immerse yourself in a world of endless plateaus, snow-capped peaks, icy glaciers, vast lakes, and wild, rushing rivers. A profound, intense silence accompanies you, a silence you can only experience far from civilization. This pristine landscape is home to all of Scandinavia's large wildlife: moose, reindeer, brown bears, wolverines, and golden and ospreys. Moose are a common sight, especially in the Rapadalen valley, and with a bit of luck, you might even spot a shy brown bear. Large herds of reindeer migrate through the high valleys you'll traverse – a unique opportunity to observe and photograph these fascinating animals. A particular highlight is the ascent of the 1,184-meter-high Skierffe, from whose summit you'll be rewarded with a spectacular view of the world-famous Rapaädno River delta. After eventful days of hiking, you'll spend the night in cozy, beautifully situated mountain huts, allowing the impressions of this unique landscape to sink in.

Day 2
Birch primeval forest & plateau
Mountain hut
Hiking distance approx. 20 km, ascent 370 m, descent 360 m
The Kungsleden trail awaits you! After breakfast, we drive to Kebnats, from where we take the ferry to our starting point in Saltoluokta. We soon leave the mountain station behind and hike steadily uphill through a light forest of birch and old pine trees. After a short time, the landscape opens up and we reach the treeless plateau, where you can intensely experience the solitude and pristine nature. A landscape shaped by the immense glaciers of the Ice Age stretches out before you. In the distance, Lake Sitojaure appears, on whose shores our first overnight hut is located. Beyond it rise the impressive, snow-capped mountain ranges of Sarek National Park. At the end of the plateau, we descend gently to the lake, reach our cabin and make ourselves comfortable there – a perfect start to your adventure on the Kungsleden.

Day 3
Plateau & Reindeer Herds
Mountain hut
Hiking distance approx. 10 km, ascent 300 m, descent 300 m
In the morning, you'll enjoy a leisurely breakfast before we pack our things. Afterwards, a motorboat will take us across Lake Sitojaure to our next starting point. With a boat trip of approximately four kilometers and a hike of about ten kilometers, this is the shortest leg of our tour. This leaves plenty of time to enjoy nature in peace, perhaps pick mushrooms and berries, or observe the diverse wildlife. We cross another wide plateau and, after a short climb, reach the area above the tree line. The view stretches almost endlessly across the fells, interrupted only by partially snow-covered peaks. With a bit of luck, we might encounter herds of reindeer migrating through the open landscape up here. Before descending to our next cabin, the view opens up to the striking Skierfe mountain and the vast delta of the Rapaädno River – a vista that ranks among the most impressive in the Swedish fells. With this panorama behind us, we reach the forest again and descend to our overnight cabin in Aktse, where we will spend two nights. A small shop and a wood-fired sauna provide additional comfort and relaxation.

Day 4
Day hike to the Skierfe
Mountain hut
Hiking distance approx. 15 km, ascent 800 m, descent 800 m
Today, depending on your mood and fitness level, you can climb Skierffe. We'll set off with light daypacks and quickly gain altitude until we reach the open plateau. From there, the path climbs gently towards the summit before becoming a bit steeper in the final stretch. But every step is worth it. Once you reach the top, a panorama of extraordinary grandeur awaits you: The west face of Skierffe plunges almost 700 meters vertically into the valley, revealing the sprawling delta of the Rapaädno River. Beyond lies the mountain and glacial landscape of Sarek National Park. Mount Nammasj rises from the water like a solid anchor in the middle of the river, while on the opposite bank, the massive rock face of Tjakkeli towers. This scenery is among the most impressive natural landscapes in Scandinavia – and will stay with you long after you leave. The entire area is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Laponia. After thoroughly enjoying the view, we return along the same path and descend back to our cabin. The evening is dedicated to relaxation: you can unwind in the wood-fired sauna or enjoy a cold beer and snacks from the cabin shop.

Day 5
Rapa Delta, mountains and glaciers
Mountain hut
Hiking distance approx. 20 km, ascent 380 m, descent 340 m
After breakfast, the motorboat is already waiting for us. After a short walk to the dock, we cross the lake, which is normally only traversed by rowboat. During the trip, we are treated to another impressive view of the Rapa Delta and the mighty rock face of Skierffe – this time from a completely new perspective. Having reached the opposite bank, the ascent begins through a pristine mixed forest of birch and conifers. We soon reach another wide plateau, offering magnificent views of the surrounding mountains, idyllic lakes, and extensive forests. The trail leads us across several rushing mountain streams, which we cross via small bridges. The trail gradually descends, and we approach our destination for the day, Pårte. The cabin is beautifully situated on a small, wooded peninsula and provides a fitting end to our tour. Here we spend our last night in the mountains, reflecting on the experiences of the past few days.

Day 6
Rivers and Swedish forest areas
Guesthouse
Hiking distance approx. 17 km, ascent 100 m, descent 250 m
Today, the final leg of our hike is on the agenda. The trail initially leads you through a wooded valley carved by rivers. After a short climb, we follow a path through a pristine, typical northern Swedish forest, passing by idyllic lakes in places. Views of the mountains of Padjelanta National Park, already visible in the distance, open up again and again. In the afternoon we reach Kvikkjokk, a small village with only about 10 to 15 inhabitants. Kvikkjokk experienced its heyday in the 16th and 17th centuries during silver mining. Today, the village is a quiet outpost at the end of the road and an important starting point for tours into the Sarek and Padjelanta National Parks. Here we will be picked up and driven back to our guesthouse, where we will spend the last night. Over dinner together, we will reminisce about the experiences of the past few days and conclude our tour in a relaxed atmosphere.

Notes on the trip
Requirements and guidelines
The mountains of Swedish Lapland are quite different from the Alps. Those familiar with Alpine hikes will miss the steep climbs here. The landscape is expansive and gentle, so this tour doesn't involve the elevation gains typical of classic mountain hikes in Central Europe. As a result, the daily stages are generally a bit longer. Nevertheless, these hikes shouldn't be underestimated: the climate at the Arctic Circle is comparable to altitudes around 2,500 meters. Summer temperatures can reach up to 30 degrees Celsius, but the weather can change very quickly, becoming cool and rainy. Towards the end of summer, around the beginning of September, the first night frosts are also possible. For this tour, you should enjoy nature, have a good level of fitness, and be able to carry the necessary equipment for a five-day trek in your backpack. The focus is not on athletic performance, but on experiencing nature far from civilization. We will traverse an alpine landscape north of the Arctic Circle, characterized by pristine wilderness. Sure-footedness is required, but no prior experience is necessary. The daily stages range between 10 and 20 kilometers; the trails are well-marked and easy to follow. Since we will be spending several days in the Arctic wilderness, it goes without saying that everyone actively pitches in – whether it's cooking, making a fire, or chopping wood. Teamwork and a willingness to help are an important part of the tour. We carry everything we need on the trail in our trekking backpacks. Each participant is responsible for a portion of the food (approx. 3 kg). Therefore, you should leave room in your backpack for your own food bag, as we carry almost all of our provisions for the entire tour ourselves.
piece of luggage
Trekking backpack (at least 45 liters), Note: Each participant will carry some of their own food. Please leave room in your backpack for the food bag.
equipment
Sleeping bag liner made of cotton, fleece or silk
clothing
Windproof and waterproof jacket (Gore-Tex), Hiking trousers made of lightweight, quick-drying material (long/short, possibly zip-off trousers), Hiking boots (Gore-Tex); ankle-high and well broken in. (waterproof), The complete packing list / equipment recommendation will be sent after booking the trip.
Mountain huts
The cozy mountain huts, operated by the Swedish Tourist Association (STF), are equipped with a kitchen, cookware, a drying room, sleeping quarters (with bunk beds or similar), and toilets. Duvets and pillows are provided. You will be given a sleeping bag liner for your stay. A sauna is often available as well. However, showers and electricity are not found in the huts. Instead, there are so-called "nature spas" by a rushing stream or lake. In the mountain huts, you can relax after a day of hiking, enjoy good food, and spend cozy evenings by a warm fire.
Arrival and departure
The nearest airport is in Luleå. For organizational reasons, group transfers are usually provided at Luleå Airport in the afternoon. Therefore, you may have to wait at the airport. If this is the case, we will inform you in advance if possible. This also applies to the return transfer to the airport. Please arrive by 7:00 PM on the first day of the tour, as we would like to explain the function of the equipment, discuss the tour itinerary, and check your personal equipment on the evening of your arrival. A great alternative is taking the night train from Stockholm to Älvsbyn. Especially in summer, when the midnight sun shines, you might even spot moose and reindeer along the way. Fly to Stockholm the day before your tour starts and board the night train to Älvsbyn directly at Stockholm-Arlanda Airport in the evening. A direct, eco-friendly journey to Swedish Lapland! The guesthouse is about a 10-minute walk from the train station. On the night train, you can choose between seats and sleeper berths. There are 6-berth compartments (either mixed or gender-segregated) or private compartments. A restaurant car and a wake-up service are available.
