Overview
On this small-group tour with a maximum of twelve guests and a local German-speaking guide you discover Sicily intensely: from Monreale and Palermo via the west coast and the Valley of the Temples to the Greek heritage of Syracuse and Ortigia, a look into Etna's crater and Taormina.
This wondrous island doesn't mind at all that it's been kicked off the toe of Italy's boot for ages. Here, where the lemons bloom and Mount Etna is as emotionally charged as the culinary creations of the volcanic soil are delicious. Where temples of Heracles and Zeus await you, the azure sea is divided into three oceans, and the vibrant spirit of the trattorias further enhances Sicily's baroque splendor. Look forward to the view into the Etna crater, the Greek heritage in Syracuse and Ortygia, and the impressive Valley of the Temples in Agrigento. You'll marvel at the golden mosaics of Monreale Cathedral, learn fascinating facts about Palermo on an anti-Mafia tour, and cook together with locals. In Sicily, they affectionately call it "Madre"—Mother. Without Europe's largest volcano, the lemons, pistachios, and wine wouldn't thrive so wonderfully in the idyllic villages. You can reach the crater rim on foot, by cable car, or by jeep and enjoy the breathtaking view. Afterward, at the del Murgo family winery, you can taste exactly what the volcanic soil does to a Sicilian wine.

Day 2
Monreale and Palermo
Grand Hotel Piazza Borsa
approx. 20 km
After breakfast, you'll begin your day with an exploration of the nearby town of Monreale. Its breathtaking cathedral is one of the most important examples of Norman-Arab architecture. The splendor of the impressive Santa Maria Nuova Cathedral awaits you inside, where gleaming gold Byzantine mosaics depict biblical stories from the Old and New Testaments. You'll stroll through the peaceful cloisters of the former Benedictine monastery, the only intact remnant of a bygone era. The Arab influences are reminiscent of the Alhambra Palace in Granada, Spain. In the afternoon, as you explore the city of Palermo, a sweet surprise awaits you at the Church of Santa Caterina: Cannoli Siciliani! The recipe for these sacred pastries comes from the former cloistered nuns. Afterward, you'll learn more about the dark history of the Italian Mafia. The origins of the Mafia in Sicily are difficult to pinpoint, as its existence is rooted in a culture of secrecy and silence. In Sicily, it is known as "Cosa Nostra" and has not only influenced the development of Sicilian society but has also gained worldwide notoriety. Learning more about the Mafia and its impact on Palermo is a fascinating and educational experience. Civil society is attempting to limit the Mafia's power through increased awareness and, in doing so, combat it. Through this approach, the residents hope for a more just and secure society. Breakfast is included. Restoration work is being carried out in the main apse of Monreale Cathedral to protect the mosaic of Christ Pantocrator. During your visit, this mosaic may be partially obscured. The exact duration of the work is not yet known. However, you can still admire the other mosaics and sights of the cathedral. You will stay in the same accommodation as the previous day.

Following in the footsteps of the Baroque and antiquity
Grand Hotel Faraglioni
approx. 230 km
After enjoying your morning coffee, your day can begin with a visit to one of Europe's largest archaeological parks. At the Parco Archeologico della Neapolis, you'll encounter impressive remains from various eras, from ancient Greece to Roman times. A true highlight is the ancient Greek theater, renowned for its exceptional acoustics and majestic architecture. Imagine ancient dramas and comedies performed here while you take in the breathtaking sea views. As you continue your walk through the park, you'll come across the Ear of Dionysius, a fascinating cave famous for its remarkable acoustics. Legend has it that the tyrant Dionysius could hear every whispered word here, giving him a significant advantage in keeping tabs on his subjects. Afterward, you'll venture into the heart of Syracuse and embark on a walking tour of the island of Ortigia, where the ancient Greek city layout is remarkably well-preserved. Here you'll find sights from numerous eras of world history and can follow in the footsteps of the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, and Normans. During the Greek period, Syracuse was the largest and wealthiest city in the entire Mediterranean. The city's great importance stemmed from its unique geological features, such as its direct location on the sea and the steep cliffs, which facilitated warfare and trade. In addition to a plentiful freshwater spring, the coastal topography created two natural harbors. Because the city lies just a few meters from the mainland, it was both well-protected and easily accessible. Furthermore, the limestone provided excellent conditions for building construction. Breakfast is included. Grand Hotel Faraglioni: The Grand Hotel Faraglioni is located in Aci Trezza, a charming little fishing village on the Riviera dei Ciclopi in the municipality of Aci Castello. Many places in the surrounding area bear the name of the ancient Aci River, which today flows largely underground through lava flows from Mount Etna. Your boutique hotel features rooms with contemporary design elements and loving nods to the region. A bar and the Faraglioni Restaurant offer moments of pure enjoyment; in addition, there is the Penelope Restaurant with Sicilian-inspired cuisine and a focus on seafood flavors. The seafront promenade runs directly in front of the hotel – perfect for a stroll. Interesting fact: The Faraglioni are striking rock formations rising from the sea that characterize the area – a perfect backdrop for your photo.

Day 8
Mount Etna and Taormina
Grand Hotel Faraglioni
approx. 100 km
Hopefully you've put on sturdy shoes. Weather permitting, our destination today is Mount Etna, one of Europe's most active volcanoes. Etna is Europe's most powerful volcano, and at a height of around 3,350 meters, it dominates the east coast of Sicily. In 2013, UNESCO added Etna to its list of World Heritage Sites. We'll ascend via a scenic road, passing idyllic Sicilian villages and some of Sicily's most famous wine regions. A cable car will take you further up the mountain, and finally, a jeep-bus will transport you to the vicinity of the crater rim. There, a local guide will explain many details and fascinating facts about the volcano's history and its myths. At an altitude of over 2,500 meters, you'll be rewarded with a magnificent view of the Ionian and Tyrrhenian coasts. At the foot of the volcano, you can then discover just how fertile the local soil is thanks to the volcano, as you participate in a wine tasting with light refreshments. In Taormina, you'll take a stroll through the town center, just like an Italian on vacation. Soak up the atmosphere and admire the ancient theater! After all these experiences, you'll return to your accommodation, where you can dream about the breathtaking play of colors in the black lava and the contrast between the rugged nature and the sophisticated lifestyle. Breakfast and lunch are included in the price. For the excursion to Mount Etna, we recommend weatherproof and warm clothing. The crater rim is located at an altitude of approximately 2,500 meters. Other guests may also participate in this excursion. In case of bad weather, the excursion to Mount Etna will be cancelled. Your pick-up time for tomorrow depends on your flight. You will receive the exact details from your tour guide today. You will stay in the same accommodation as the previous day.
