Overview

On this tour with a maximum of twelve guests and a local guide you discover the imperial cities of Rabat, Fez, Meknes and Marrakech. Over the High Atlas and through the Ziz valley you travel to the Sahara dunes of Erg Chebbi, then along the Road of the Kasbahs to Aït Benhaddou and a grand finale on Jemaa el-Fnaa.

Remember your sunglasses. Not because of the sun, it'll be shining anyway. But the splendor of the ancient imperial cities of Rabat, Fez, Meknes, and Marrakech is a feast for the eyes, and you'll need them again on the Street of the Kasbahs, in the Ziz Valley of the High Atlas Mountains, in the Saharan dunes of Erg Chebbi, in Ait Benhaddou, where almost all the classic sword-and-sandal films were shot in the scorching mud-brick alleyways. And for the fairytale finale at 1001 Nights in Djemaa el-Fna square. Look forward to visiting the imperial cities of Rabat, Fes, Meknes, and Marrakech, enjoying a family dinner in Fes, and traveling through the Ziz Valley to the edge of the Sahara. You'll spend a night in a desert camp, follow the impressive Road of the Kasbahs, and visit a women's initiative. Your itinerary includes all four imperial cities of Morocco: Rabat, Fez, Meknes, and Marrakech. The highlight of your trip will be Marrakech, with its Medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its vibrant markets. Don't miss the lively Djemaa el-Fna square in the evening!

  • Day 3
Royal cities times three: Rabat, Meknes and Fez

    Riad Salam

    approx. 220 km

Rabat, the capital of Morocco, is also the current residence of King Mohammed VI and his family. On a tour through the old city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2012, you'll visit, among other things, the Hassan Tower and the magnificent Mausoleum of Mohammed V. He was the first king of Morocco and the grandfather of the current king. Then, a quick visit to the Kasbah of the Udayas and the Andalusian Garden before continuing your journey to Meknes. Compared to the other imperial cities, Meknes was only the seat of the king once, and even then only for a relatively short time. Sultan Moulay Ismail lived and ruled in Meknes between 1672 and 1727. During this time, he commissioned the construction of an entire palace complex (Ville Impériale), which, however, was never completed. You'll visit the magnificent tomb of the Sultan himself, pass through the gigantic Bab Mansour city gate, and finally arrive at Place el Hedim. Next, you'll visit the ruins of Volubilis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This open-air museum offers a glimpse into life some 2,000 years ago. The well-preserved and intricately detailed floor mosaics are particularly impressive. In the late afternoon, you'll reach the third imperial city of the day: Welcome to Fes. Breakfast is included. The Mansour Baths in Meknes are currently undergoing renovations to preserve their historical splendor for future visitors. At the same time, major construction work is taking place in the city, so you may only be able to get a limited view of the city at the moment. A specific completion date for the work has not yet been set. Riad Salam: Riad Salam is located in the southwestern part of the Fes medina. As soon as you pass through the gilded portal, you'll find yourself in a breathtaking palace straight out of the Arabian Nights. The original house dates back to the 17th century, and all the mosaics, woodwork, and other decorations are still handcrafted. There are now three courtyards, each uniquely and stylishly designed. The spa offers massages and a hammam, but advance booking is required. The seasonal rooftop terrace is the perfect spot for tea overlooking the old city.

  • Day 4
Immerse yourself in Morocco's oldest imperial city

    Riad Salam

From the Borj Sud fortress, you'll gaze upon the oldest of Morocco's four imperial cities in the morning. As you visit the former Bou Inania madrasa and stroll past the Mausoleum of Idris II and the Kairaouine complex, your guide will explain the significance of these sites for devout Muslims. In the afternoon, you'll travel to modern Fez and experience a different side of the city. Relax in a cozy café on Hassan II Avenue and soak up the vibrant atmosphere. Afterwards, you return to the old town and have some time to stroll through the souks before being invited to a Moroccan family's home in the evening. Breakfast and dinner are included. Tonight you'll enjoy dinner at the home of a Moroccan family. You will stay in the same accommodation as the previous day.

  • Day 5
Across the High Atlas Mountains and through the Ziz Valley to the edge of the Sahara.

    Riad Madu

Early in the morning, you leave Fes and drive through the vast cedar forests of the Middle Atlas Mountains. En route, you stop near the village of Azrou to stretch your legs in a cedar grove. With a bit of luck, you might even spot the macaques that inhabit this area. Afterwards, you continue your journey south. The green forests and mountains of the north gradually give way to the rugged rock formations of the High Atlas. Around midday, you reach Midelt, and in the afternoon, you traverse the captivating landscape of the Ziz Valley. As you continue towards the edge of the Sahara, desert landscapes alternate with oases until the first sand dunes appear on the horizon. In the early evening, you finally arrive in the small town of Merzouga and at your accommodation. The included meals are breakfast, lunch and dinner. The route through breathtaking landscapes covers approximately 480 km. We recommend bringing a jacket for the drive through the mountains, as it can get quite cold due to the altitude. Be prepared to leave early today. Your tour guide will inform you of the exact time on site. Riad Madu: Peacefully situated at the foot of the Erg Chebbi sand dunes, Riad Madu is an excellent base for exploring the Moroccan desert. Built in the traditional Berber style, the accommodation primarily uses natural materials. Tadelakt and warm-colored tiles create an authentic desert ambiance. A cozy courtyard and a seasonal terrace with a pool invite you to relax, and the on-site restaurant offers delicious Moroccan specialties.

    Magical Marrakech

    Riad Les Trois Palmiers

Until the 20th century, Marrakech, the Berber city, was the traditional center and trading hub between Morocco and the Sahara. Today, this cultural metropolis attracts artists, writers, designers, and other creatives. Your exploration begins at the impressive Koutoubia Mosque, dating back to the 12th century. Its minaret rises 70 meters above the city and is a well-known symbol of Marrakech. Non-Muslims are not permitted inside, but even from the outside, the oldest mosque in the country is an imposing structure. Spend the afternoon in the royal city of Marrakech at your leisure. We haven't planned a fixed itinerary for you, so you'll have plenty of time to get lost in the souks of Marrakech, buy last-minute souvenirs, and simply relax. In the evening, don't miss the spectacle at Djemaa El Fna. This square is the heart of the medina and transforms throughout the day. In the afternoon, it becomes a stage for street performers and visitors, and in the evening, numerous food stalls open their doors. Breakfast is included. If you would like to have dinner at your accommodation this evening, we recommend booking in advance this morning. You will stay in the same accommodation as the previous day.
