RequestNotes on the trip
Travel time
The best time to travel this route is during spring (April to June) and fall (September to October). During these months, temperatures are pleasant, desert regions like Joshua Tree and Death Valley are easily accessible, and the Sierra Nevada mountain passes are usually open. While the route is feasible in summer, the desert heat can be extreme, and the national parks are very crowded. In winter, mountain passes like Tioga Pass to Yosemite are often closed, requiring detours.
Advance booking
Regardless of the season, booking in advance is essential. Accommodations in Yosemite, Sequoia/Kings Canyon, and the coastal cities (Big Sur, Monterey, Santa Barbara) are typically fully booked months ahead of time. Those wishing to stay in lodges or within the national parks should book at least 6 to 9 months in advance. The most popular campgrounds and wineries in Napa Valley also require booking well in advance.
Road 1 - Coastal road closed
The legendary Highway 1 along the Pacific coast is one of the most scenic routes in the world; however, it is not currently fully open. A section south of Big Sur remains closed due to landslides, making it impossible to travel the entire coastal highway from San Francisco to Los Angeles. Nevertheless, much of the route is easily accessible from both the north and south, allowing you to enjoy the most beautiful stretches, such as from Monterey to Big Sur and from San Simeon to Santa Barbara. To avoid the closure, you will need to use Highway 101 inland, which will increase your travel time. Be sure to check current road conditions with Caltrans or regional information websites shortly before your trip to plan your route effectively.
