Overview
With their dry, mild climate, the Gulf Islands are among British Columbia’s finest paddling areas. For four days you paddle between national park islands, sandstone shores and arbutus trees and pitch your tent right by the water – for beginners and experienced paddlers alike.
The southern Gulf Islands, located between Vancouver Island and the Canadian mainland, are among the most beautiful paddling destinations in British Columbia. Some of the islands lie within the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve, while others are provincial parks, First Nations reserves, or privately owned. Situated in the rain shadow of Vancouver Island's mountains, the climate here is significantly drier than in the rest of British Columbia. Sandstone formations and arbutus trees with their vibrant reddish-brown bark characterize the coastlines, creating a fascinating interplay of shapes and colors. Currents flow between some of the islands, adding a touch of excitement. In the south, north of Victoria, the currents are stronger and there is more boat traffic, while in the north, south of Nanaimo, the waters are calmer. Both areas teem with wildlife and boast impressive land and seascapes. For four days, you'll paddle through this island paradise with experienced guides, staying overnight in tented camps right on the water.

Days 2–3
Paddling between the islands
Tent camp, full board
Kayak
Depending on the conditions, we either stay in base camp and explore the surroundings by kayak before the wind picks up in the afternoon, or we paddle on to a new campsite, discovering bays, channels and small islands along the way. On the northern tours starting in Cedar-by-the-Sea, Yellow Point, or Salt Spring Island, we mostly paddle in calm, sheltered waters north of Salt Spring Island. Possible destinations include Pirate's Cove, Dionisio Point, Wallace Island, Tent Island, and Montague Harbour. On the southern tours starting in Sidney, Swartz Bay, or Oak Bay near Victoria, we explore the islands south and east of Salt Spring Island, including Portland Island, Fulford Harbour, Prevost Island, Montague Harbour, Mayne Island, the Pender Islands, and Saturna Island. Here, currents and the traffic of large vessels such as ferries require greater attention.
