Overview
The Marangu or "Coca-Cola" Route is considered the easiest route up Kilimanjaro – though easy is relative. Steady ascents take you from Mandara Hut via Horombo to Kibo Hut, through rainforest and moorland up to the Kibo plateau. On the long summit day you reach Uhuru Peak.
The Marangu Route, also known as the "Coca-Cola" Route, is considered the easiest of all Kilimanjaro routes. However, the word "easy" is relative. For centuries, Kilimanjaro has impressed people from all over the world. It rises imposingly from the endless African savannah. At 5,895 meters, it is the highest freestanding mountain in the world. For many mountaineers, it is one of their dream peaks, and UNESCO has even designated it a World Heritage Site. Although the Marangu Route seems to be the easiest way to climb Kilimanjaro, many trekkers still give up here. This is usually because they have underestimated the route. It is important to approach even this "easy" route with good preparation. No matter which route you choose for your climb, the altitude remains the greatest challenge. Go slowly from the beginning and listen to the constant "Pole Pole" (slowly, slowly) from your guide and porters. The Coca-Cola Route offers stunning views of Kibo and Mawenzi at every turn. The different vegetation zones you traverse each have their own unique charm. Be prepared for frequent oncoming hikers, as the ascent and descent follow the same path.

Day 3
Mandara Hut - Horombo Hut (2,700 m - 3,720 m)

The second day begins with a steep climb through the last stretch of rainforest. The landscape then changes, and you reach the open steppe, covered in giant heather. A detour to the Maundi Crater is worthwhile, offering a fantastic view of Kilimanjaro. The trail continues through tall steppe grass to the Horombo Hut, which you'll reach after about 6-7 hours. Just before the hut, nestled in a rocky hollow, you can see giant senecios and lobelias.

Day 4
Horombo Hut - Kibo Hut (3,720 m - 4,700 m)
Mountain hut
Today you have two options to get from the hut to the saddle. The direct route to the Mawenzi Saddle (Upper Trail) is very rocky and eroded. The ascent takes about 2 hours. It's another three hours to Kibo Hut. The so-called Lower Trail is easier and leads you through scrubland and high moorland. You reach the saddle about 1 km before Kibo Hut. The landscape now becomes noticeably rockier and rugged, almost like a stony desert with reddish-brown soil. You will spend the night in Kibo Hut. The hike to the hut takes 5-7 hours. You should go to bed early, as the summit attempt starts very early.

Summit day: Kibo Hut (4,700 m) - Uhuru Peak (5,898 m) - Horombo Hut (3,720 m)
Mountain hut
If you want to experience the unique sunrise at Gilman's Point (5,681 m), you should set off around midnight. The trail begins with a zigzag ascent across a scree slope. After about two hours, you'll reach Hans Meyer Cave, and the path becomes somewhat steeper. After another three hours or so, you'll arrive at Gilman's Point. Here, you'll be rewarded with a dramatic view of the rising sun, which bathes the ice fields and the rugged peaks of Mawenzi in a shimmering red glow. The trail continues with a gentle incline along the crater rim until you finally reach Uhuru Peak (5,898 m). Enjoy this moment! Now comes the long descent to the Kibo hut and, after a break, onward to the Horombo hut.

Differences compared to the other routes
Compared to most other routes that require camping, the Marangu Route offers overnight stays in mountain huts, increasing comfort, especially in bad weather. The trails are well-maintained and free of climbing sections, making this route less technically demanding and more accessible for less experienced hikers. The scenery along the Marangu route is particularly appealing, especially the extensive rainforest areas traversed at the beginning of the hike. However, this route has the disadvantage that the ascent and descent follow the same path, which can be perceived as less varied compared to routes with different ascent and descent paths. Finally, the Marangu route has the highest number of visitors of all Kilimanjaro routes, as it is considered one of the easier and more comfortable options. Therefore, it can get very crowded during peak season.

The Marangu Route, also known as the "Coca-Cola Route," is the most traditional and frequently climbed route on Kilimanjaro. It leads over 5-6 days through a steady ascent of rainforest and moorland to the Kibo Plateau and finally to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). A distinctive feature of this route is the overnight stays in simple mountain huts instead of tents.
Daily hiking times range from 5 to 7 hours, increasing to 12 to 14 hours on summit day. While the route is not technically difficult, it demands excellent physical condition, sure-footedness, and acclimatization to high altitudes. Because the Marangu Route allows less time for acclimatization, the exertion is high and the chances of reaching the summit are lower than on longer routes.
It is suitable for sporty hikers who want to climb Kilimanjaro in the classic and most comfortable way with overnight stays in huts.

Notes on the trip
Weather Kilimanjaro
Mount Kilimanjaro can be climbed year-round, but the best time to visit is during January, February, and early March. Visibility on the mountain is particularly good during this period. From late March to May, however, it is the rainy season in Tanzania, characterized by overcast skies and snowfall in the higher regions of Kilimanjaro. In June and July, hikers can expect mostly clear skies and cold nights, while August, September, and October are the warmest and most sought-after months. October, November, and December may see clouds and brief thunderstorms, and snow at higher elevations – a breathtaking setting that promises a white Christmas at the highest point in Africa.
