Overview

From Dushanbe you travel by off-road vehicle along the legendary Pamir Highway to Khorog. There you switch to your bike and follow the Wakhan valley along the Afghan border on a seven-day expedition via Ishkashim and Vrang to Zorkul, on to Lake Karakul and into Kyrgyzstan as far as Lenin Peak.

The Pamir Mountains are among the most spectacular and remote high mountain regions in the world. With peaks exceeding 7,000 meters, they stretch across eastern Tajikistan and offer a unique blend of rugged nature, impressive cultural landscapes, and boundless hospitality. Our journey begins in Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan. From there, we travel by off-road vehicle along the legendary Pamir Highway to Khorog, where we switch to our bicycles. The following seven-day cycling expedition takes us through the fascinating Wakhan Corridor, a route brimming with scenic and historical highlights. Along the way, breathtaking views of the icy giants of the Hindu Kush await us, including the imposing 6,000-meter peaks of Pik Marx and Engels, as well as the vast expanse of the Zor Kul Nature Reserve. We relax in hot springs, discover historical sites along the ancient Silk Road, and embark on a unique excursion into the realm of the Marco Polo sheep. The highlight is the spectacular view of Pik Lenin, where we spend the night in a yurt camp at an altitude of 3,600 meters. During the tour, our experienced support team will take care of luggage transport and provide us with delicious meals. Thanks to the support of four-wheel-drive vehicles, you can cover sections of the route by car at any time. Highlights of the trip: Challenging mountain bike tour through the Wakhan corridor Visit historical sites along the route Bathing in hot springs on several days Spectacular views of the peaks of the Hindu Kush and Pamirs An unforgettable trip to see the Marco Polo sheep Support vehicle and luggage transport for a relaxed journey

    Guesthouse

    46 km / 400 m ascent

From the garden of our guesthouse, we enjoyed breathtaking views over the Panj Valley while having breakfast. In the morning, the nearby Yamchun Fortress was on the agenda. Perched at 3,000 meters above the valley, it is one of the largest fortresses in the Pamirs, measuring 900 x 300 meters. Built around 300 BC, it tells the story of this valley's long history as an important trade route. The relatively short 45 km route to Hissor offers many more exciting stops: the Pamir Museum of Muborak Vakhani, a Buddhist monastery, and various shrines. Upon arrival in Hissor, we will spend the night in a traditional Pamir guesthouse.

    Tent

    62 km / 1,400 m ascent

Hissor lies at the confluence of the Wakhan and Pamir rivers, which from this point onward form the Panj River. Geographically, this point also marks the beginning of the actual Wakhan Corridor. From here, our journey continues into the Eastern Pamirs. A steep climb of about 300 meters awaits us first thing in the morning. From the pass summit, we enjoy a breathtaking view over the vast river delta. With a bit of luck, we might spot caravans on the other side of the river later on. We set up our first tent camp below the Khargush Pass. It is well-equipped with two-person tents for individual use, a shower tent, a toilet tent, and a communal tent where we can relax together at tables and chairs.

After breakfast, we drive to the Kargush border and guard station, 15 kilometers away, where the roads diverge. While the main road leads us to the Kargush Pass (4,344 m), we choose the route heading east, which takes us to the Zor Kul Nature Reserve. Our destination for today is Zor Kul Lake. The road winds along the Zor Kul River, through picturesque floodplains and across the vast plateau, bordered to the south by the imposing, over 5,000-meter-high peaks of the Little Pamirs. We gradually gain altitude. Even though there are no major passes or steep climbs today, the elevation gain adds up, making the day a real challenge. At Zor Kul Lake, at 4,180 m, we reach the highest of all our camps. The breathtaking panorama of the Little Pamirs and the feeling of getting ever closer to the end of the world make this leg of the journey an unforgettable experience.

    7. Stage Zor Kul – Jarti Gumbez

    Guesthouse

    58 km / 550 m ascent

Our final leg today takes us along Lake Zor Kul to Jarti Gumbez. At Kuk Dzhigit, where we'll stop for lunch, we'll reach the realm of the Marco Polo sheep. With a bit of luck and binoculars, we might spot these rare animals. During the morning, we'll also pass an old Soviet military and radar station, discover petroglyphs, and encounter some cattle herders. After lunch, the highest point of the trip awaits us – an unnamed pass at 4,420 meters. Thanks to our already reached altitude of over 4,200 meters, the climb is less strenuous than initially expected. After a 15-kilometer descent on a gravel track, we'll reach our guesthouse by the hot springs of Jarti Gumbez, marking the transition to the Kyrgyz part of the Pamir Mountains. The cycling portion of our journey thus concludes after almost 500 kilometers. Tonight, we'll stay at the "Pamir Spa" near Kuban, where we can relax in the spa area's several pools fed by warm spring water. We will spend the night in shared rooms.

  • Day 11
    Jarti Gumbez – Karakul

    Guesthouse

    approx. 220 km

Jarti Gumbez lies far to the east in the Pamir Mountains, near the Chinese border. Due to its remoteness and status as a nature reserve, it boasts the world's largest populations of Marco Polo game. This is reason enough to set off early this morning before breakfast by car, hoping to spot these animals. After breakfast at the guesthouse, we'll continue our journey by vehicle for approximately 220 kilometers back to the Pamir Highway, passing the old Soviet Shorbulog Observatory. A stop at the observatory is a must in good weather, as on clear days you can see the 7,509-meter-high Muztagata. Located in China, its name translates to "Father of Icebergs." The route then leads over the Ak Baital Pass (4,655 m), the highest point on the Pamir Highway, and across the Eastern Pamir Plateau. Our destination, Karakul, lies at an altitude of over 4,000 meters on the shores of the largest lake in Tajikistan, also named Karakul. In the afternoon we prepare our bikes for the last two stages and can enjoy a hot banya (Russian sauna).

The hardest part is over: time for a passport photo against the breathtaking backdrop of the glaciers of the Trans-Alai Range. Our legs can now relax a bit on the descent to the Kyrgyz border post, 20 kilometers away. And once again, the landscape changes completely. After crossing the border, we enter the vast grasslands of Kyrgyzstan, where herds of horses and sheep graze and yurts dot the landscape. We reach our guesthouse in Sary-Tash in the late afternoon.

Character of the trip

Fitness

Very demanding

Altitude

Very high

Culture / nature

Nature-led

In most groups, participants have varying levels of fitness and riding skills. However, this isn't a problem – we adapt to the circumstances! Ambitious riders can lead for many sections, while the tours are designed so that even at a slower pace, each stage is reached in time for dinner. In case of emergency, there's the option of switching to the support vehicle.

Endurance: high

The tour places high demands on physical fitness due to the climatic conditions and especially the altitude. Good stamina is required, as some stages are up to 100 km long. On several days, we will be at altitudes of over 4,000 meters. Due to the extreme climatic conditions, the high altitude, and the sometimes challenging trail conditions, our participants perceive the stages as significantly more strenuous than comparable routes in the Alps. The tour's itinerary allows for gradual acclimatization to the altitude.

Riding technique: easy

The tour is technically manageable. Approximately 30% of the route is on paved roads, while 70% is on gravel tracks, some of which contain scree and sand.

    Notes on the trip

    Active group tour

An active group trip can be an enriching experience, but it also requires adaptability and a willingness to compromise. The abilities of the other participants may differ from yours. You may need to step outside your comfort zone or adjust your expectations so that the group can enjoy the trip together. Often, you will share unforgettable moments with like-minded people and forge new friendships.

Program adjustments depending on weather conditions

The safety of our participants is our top priority on our active tours. Since we often travel in alpine or remote regions, weather conditions such as strong winds, fog, persistent rain or snowfall, as well as other unforeseen circumstances, can affect the execution of the planned route. In such cases, our experienced local guide will react flexibly and adjust the route or program accordingly to ensure the safety of everyone involved. These decisions are always made in the best interests of all participants, so that the tour remains safe and as enjoyable as possible. Any claims for compensation are excluded in such cases.

    Entry to Tajikistan

To enter Tajikistan, citizens of Germany and Austria need a passport that is valid for at least six months, proof of return or onward travel documents (tickets), and no longer require a visa for stays of up to 30 days. Information for Austrian citizens: https://www.bmeia.gv.at/reise-services/reiseinformation/land/tadschikistan Information for German citizens: https://www.auswaertiges-amt.de/de/service/laender/tadschikistan-node/tadschikistansicherheit-206756#content_3 Travel medicine advice (regarding vaccinations, etc.): https://tropeninstitut.de/ihr-reiseziel

    Kyrgyzstan Entry

Citizens of Germany, Austria, Switzerland, or Italy do not need a visa to enter Kyrgyzstan for stays of up to 60 days. If you are from another country, please contact the relevant embassy or consulate for information. Make copies of your passport or ID card and your flight ticket before you leave. This will make it easier to replace them if they are lost. Keep the copies separate from the original documents and other valuables to be on the safe side.

    Kyrgyzstan Health

There are no legal vaccination requirements for entry into Kyrgyzstan. However, ensure that your vaccination status is up-to-date for recommended standard vaccinations such as tetanus, diphtheria, and polio. Additionally, vaccinations against hepatitis A and, depending on individual needs, hepatitis B and rabies are recommended. It is best to consult your doctor about this. Contact your doctor in good time, ideally a few months before your trip, to create a suitable vaccination plan. Also pack a personal travel first-aid kit tailored to your individual needs. It should contain, among other things, medication for diarrhea, headaches, and colds, as well as bandages and plasters.

    Kyrgyzstan Infrastructure

Kyrgyzstan has a poorly developed infrastructure, and the roads are often in bad condition. Weather conditions can cause certain sections of the route to be temporarily impassable, necessitating adjustments to the itinerary. The program described above represents the ideal option and has been designed to reflect the best possible experience. Our travel dates are carefully coordinated with the generally favorable weather conditions in the region at this time of year to ensure you a safe and unforgettable experience.

    Kyrgyzstan Climate

Kyrgyzstan is characterized by a dry continental climate with pronounced temperature fluctuations. While summer heat with temperatures up to 45 °C is not uncommon in the south of the country, temperatures in winter often drop below -10 °C, even in lower-lying regions. Sunny weather dominates during July, August, and September – with an average of 250 sunny days a year, Kyrgyzstan offers ideal conditions for outdoor activities. During this time, daytime high temperatures reach around 35°C in Bishkek, approximately 30°C at Lake Issyk-Kul, and a pleasant 15°C at Lake Son-Kul. However, nights cool down considerably, especially at higher altitudes, and even in summer, temperatures in the high mountains can drop close to freezing.
