acclimatization
We recommend arriving in Huaraz a few days before the start of your trek to allow yourself to acclimatize to the altitude. This will improve your fitness and allow you to fully enjoy the tour. Additional acclimatization day hikes can be booked upon request, for example to Laguna 69, Laguna Churup, or Wilcacocha. These day hikes not only aid acclimatization but also offer impressive nature experiences even before the trek begins.

The Santa Cruz Trek is rated as moderate and offers the ideal combination of spectacular scenery, good infrastructure, and classic Andean trekking. Daily hiking time is approximately five to seven hours. The biggest challenges are the ascent to the Punta Unión Pass at 4,750 meters and the long descents into the valleys. The tour leads through flowering highland valleys with buttercups, lupins, orchids, and red bromeliads growing on the rocks. With a bit of luck, you might spot wildlife such as caracaras, falcons, hummingbirds, Andean geese, vizcachas, or even Andean foxes.

Notes on the trip
Our partner in Huaraz
For many years, we have worked with Rodolfo and his team in Huaraz, with whom we ourselves have traveled in the Andes. This small, local company was founded in 2010 with the aim of providing personalized trekking and climbing experiences away from mass tourism. Guest safety is their top priority. Tours are led by a small team of professionally trained IFMGA mountain guides, certified by the Peruvian Mountain Guides Association. All guides have in-depth first aid knowledge and know the routes in the Cordillera Blanca and Cordillera Huayhuash intimately. The company considers itself a "local expert" for trekking and mountaineering in Huascarán National Park and the surrounding mountain ranges. With over ten years of experience, they offer high-quality tours in small groups – with meticulous attention to every detail. Fair treatment is particularly important: cooks, porters, and muleteers receive above-average wages. This fosters a trusting partnership with a dedicated local crew who bring not only professionalism but also a passion for the nature and culture of the Andes. This means you'll be accompanied on your journey by a well-coordinated, experienced, and responsible team, ensuring your tour is a safe and unforgettable experience.
