  • Day 8
Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco

    2 nights in Cusco

Today you can look forward to a true highlight of your tour! Early this morning, we'll set off for one of the New Seven Wonders of the World: the former Inca city of Machu Picchu (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). To this day, countless mysteries and myths surround the origins of this treasure. The lost Inca city was never discovered by the Spanish and seemed to have been forgotten for centuries until it was rediscovered, rather by chance, by Hiram Bingham in 1911. Enjoy this impressive and majestic place and soak up the mystical atmosphere amidst the imposing mountain panorama. If you have a head for heights, the hike along the sometimes steep rock faces to the Inca bridge is highly recommended – the narrow bridge offers an unparalleled view. Please note: Due to legal regulations, the entry time to Machu Picchu is limited to 2.5 hours. Visitors are distributed across different routes to coordinate visitor flow and protect the ruins. Optionally, you can climb Huayna Picchu, the highest mountain in the complex, on this day. The ascent involves some steep stairs and around 1,600 steps and is challenging; good physical condition and a head for heights are essential. Tickets are limited to 200 per day and must be booked in advance (€90 per person, bookable when registering). Afterwards, the journey continues by train and bus back through the Sacred Valley to Cusco. (F)

Among rusted locomotives and carriages, standing like silent witnesses to bygone eras in the endless expanse, the scene appears almost surreal. Next, you'll encounter the White Sea – the Uyuni Salt Flat. Brilliantly luminous salt stretches as far as the eye can see: the largest salt desert on Earth covers an area of 12,000 square kilometers. An exciting expedition will provide opportunities for unique photographs. After a short walk through the vast white expanse, we head to Incahuasi Island, a jewel in the middle of the salt desert. There, giant cacti reach for the sky, offering a spectacular contrast to the endless white expanse. After a lunch break, we continue to the mystical salt mounds and the Salt Museum, which is built from blocks of salt. To conclude the day, you'll visit the Galaxy Caves, underwater caves formed by a volcanic eruption. Their bizarre rock formations, along with ancient stalactites and stalagmites, create an otherworldly atmosphere. (F/M/A)

The tour ends at Calama airport, where your guide will say goodbye before you board your domestic flight to Santiago, Chile. In Chile's capital, your new tour guide will meet you and accompany you to the hotel where you will spend the last two nights. Enjoy a leisurely dinner in the hotel restaurant in the evening or stroll through the bohemian Lastarria district with its diverse culinary offerings. (F)
