  • Day 12
Day hike to Changunarayan and Bhaktapur

    2 nights in Bhaktapur (F)

    Hike approx. 12 km / approx. 5–6 h

    approx. 5 km / approx. 20 min

Rise early and prepare to be enchanted: The first rays of sunlight slowly peek out from behind the surrounding mountain ranges, bathing the landscape in a magical atmosphere. Look forward to breathtaking views of the Himalayas, all the way to Mount Everest. Nagarkot, the picturesque village near the Kathmandu Valley, is the perfect starting point. Soon after sunrise and a hearty breakfast, you'll set off on your trek to Changunarayan, which will lead you through idyllic Tamang villages and lush pine forests. During the descent, you'll pass many small mountain villages. Your destination is the Changunarayan Temple, one of the seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the Kathmandu Valley. The oldest temple in the valley dates back to the 7th century and is famous for its intricate carvings and sculptures. Along the way, you'll enjoy the peaceful scenery and views of the surrounding hills and valleys. After an exciting morning, you'll continue your journey by minibus to Bhaktapur, where another highlight awaits you: Bhaktapur Durbar Square. As soon as you enter this historic square, you'll be enveloped by a feeling of inner harmony. Art, architecture, and the unique design create a captivating atmosphere. The palace, dating back to 1754, the golden gate, and the National Art Gallery inside will inspire awe. A visit to a pottery workshop in Bhaktapur offers insights into traditional pottery making. Experience the potters' artistry in the famous pottery square and learn how the various clay pots are made. Perhaps you'll even be tempted to take a piece of art home with you. Afterwards, you and your fellow travelers will stroll through the narrow streets of the medieval town and be introduced to the art of sound bowl therapy. A healer will demonstrate the effects of handcrafted bowls: the gentle vibrations and resonances penetrate body and mind, activating the seven chakras. Your tour guide will be happy to answer any questions you may have about this relatively unknown topic – and perhaps you'll even want to try out one or two of the methods yourself. To finish, you will be served a local delicacy: Juju Dhau, which translates to royal curd. This famous Nepalese yogurt is primarily produced in the Kathmandu Valley and is known for its unique taste and creamy consistency.

Day hike to Changunarayan and Bhaktapur

    Day 12

This famous Nepalese yogurt is primarily produced in the Kathmandu Valley and is known for its unique taste and creamy consistency.

    approx. 14 km / approx. 40 min

Today you're looking forward to one last special day hike in Nepal. The starting point is Dhulikhel. The area is known among locals for its natural beauty and ancient traditions, and is popular for picnics and short hikes. Many Hindu temples in the vicinity contribute to the region's cultural heritage. Along the way, you'll discover the ancient Newar city of Panauti with its historic temples and cultural treasures. You'll admire the terraced fields along the route, which provide a picturesque backdrop and reflect the traditional way of life of the local people. You'll be a guest in a local farmhouse and learn firsthand about fascinating aspects of daily life in the area. The highlight of today's trek is Namobuddha Monastery, a traditional Tibetan Buddhist monastery of the Karma Kagyu tradition, renowned for its history and serving as a school for novice monks of all ages. Many legends live on within the monastery walls, and your guide will be happy to share the details of these stories with you as you settle down for a relaxing picnic. The hill on which the monastery sits is at an altitude of approximately 1,750 meters and offers breathtaking panoramic views of Himalayan peaks such as Gaurishanker, Dorje Lakpa, and Ganesh Himal. Warm interactions with local children will give you insight into the lives of the local community. Get to know the staff and share stories about everyday life – your tour guide will be happy to assist you with any language barriers. If your visit falls on a day when the school is closed, you will have the opportunity to connect with the residents of the old Newari settlement of Dhulikhel, stroll past various temples, and visit the local market with its handicrafts and local food. You round off the afternoon with a break in a local café. Enjoy fresh tea and homemade cookies while you reflect on the special moments of the day. Afterwards, you'll return to Bhaktapur by minibus, where you'll spend your last night in Nepal. After checking in, you'll meet up one last time with your fellow travelers and your tour guide. During these conversations, you'll quickly discover that everyone has a different, very personal highlight of the tour. Share your experiences over a farewell dinner and reminisce about your trip.
