Day 17
Mumbai
Fariyas Hotel Mumbai
“Shantaram” tour • Gateway of India • Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya museum • CSMT railway station (UNESCO World Heritage) • Dhobi Ghat • Colaba
In the morning you set off on a themed “Shantaram” tour. The name comes from the novel by Gregory David Roberts, which describes Mumbai in all its contrasts – between poverty, energy, everyday life and colonial history. The tour uses this approach to show the city as a many-layered interplay of worlds. Stops include the Gateway of India on the harbour and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya museum with its collections on Indian art, history and culture. On a drive through the colonial centre you see the imposing CSMT railway station (UNESCO World Heritage) and the university buildings around the Rajabai Clock Tower. A striking contrast is the Dhobi Ghat, the huge open-air laundry, which shows how the city runs on well-rehearsed routines. After a break at the hotel you take a guided walk through Colaba with its small shops and cafés in the early evening. To finish, your tour guide treats you to a cool drink at a long-established café that has been a city meeting point for decades. (B)
