Overview
From beach to beach you hike with a backpack through coastal rainforest, across creek ravines and through muddy stretches, with some sections passable only at low tide. You camp on the coast, and the tide pools at Botanical Beach are the finale.
The Juan de Fuca Trail was created in 1996 to complement the West Coast Trail, in conjunction with the 1994 Commonwealth Games. Originally intended to be shorter and less strenuous, it has evolved into a true challenge over the years. Our partner has been guiding groups along this trail since 1998. The trail is accessible via access paths from the road and is slightly less exposed than the West Coast Trail, resulting in a somewhat less varied landscape, though this is hardly noticeable. The beaches and forests are still magnificent. At the end of the trail lies Botanical Beach near Port Renfrew, famous for its large tide pools teeming with marine life. The large Sombrio Beach in the middle of the trail is popular with surfers, whom you can relax and watch after a day's hike. For a long time, it was a settlement of alternative lifestyles before becoming a provincial park. The eastern half of the trail is the most strenuous but rewards you with fantastic beaches and coastal views.

Day 1
From Nanaimo to Mystic Beach
Tent camp, dinner
Transfer, hiking
In the morning, we'll meet at a pre-arranged meeting point in Nanaimo. After introductions and a gear check, we'll drive to the Juan de Fuca Trailhead, leaving a vehicle for the return trip. Then it's time to lace up our boots, grab our backpacks, and hit the trail. We'll hike through regenerating forest and across a suspension bridge, reaching Mystic Beach and the first possible campsite after about 2 kilometers. Depending on the time and tides, we'll continue hiking, crossing several streams and a tide-dependent section, until we reach Bear Beach.

Culture / nature
Pure nature
The tour is moderately difficult to strenuous and suitable for those with good physical condition and sure footing. You'll be hiking with a backpack for 5.5 days, encountering elevation changes in gorges, muddy sections, stream crossings, and stretches that are only passable at low tide. Add to that half a day for travel to and from the starting point. You'll be camping in tents on the coast. You'll help with setting up and taking down the camps. Be prepared for rain and wind, and bring a love of basic conditions in the wilderness.

Notes on the trip
Program adjustments depending on weather conditions
Depending on the tides and conditions, the tour may also take place in reverse, from west to east. Since we are traveling in the wilderness, the itinerary may also change depending on the weather, trail conditions, and the group's fitness level. Your safety is always our top priority. You will receive the exact pick-up time at least 12 hours in advance by phone, email, or text message.
