Overview

From Whitehorse you travel to Dawson City, follow the Dempster Highway through the snowy Tombstone Mountains, cross the Arctic Circle and reach Inuvik and Aklavik over ice bridges. An ice road takes you on to Tuktoyaktuk – a journey at −20 °C and colder.

Driving across an ice road and standing on the frozen Arctic Ocean – this Arctic Road Trip makes that dream a reality. From Whitehorse, you'll travel back in time to the Klondike Gold Rush era in the gold rush town of Dawson City, then follow the legendary Dempster Highway north through the snow-covered Tombstone Mountains. You'll cross the Arctic Circle with a small celebration, travel through the Richardson Mountains, and reach the Arctic town of Inuvik via ice bridges on the Peel and Mackenzie Rivers. From there, you'll continue along the ice road into the Mackenzie Delta to Aklavik and on to Tuktoyaktuk, where an Inuvialuit family will welcome you. Along the way, you'll have excellent chances of seeing the dancing Northern Lights. The return flight to Whitehorse will reward you with spectacular views of the endless expanse of the North.

  • Day 2
    Whitehorse

    Hotel

With just over 30,000 friendly and adventurous inhabitants, Whitehorse has the feel of a small town. Nevertheless, it boasts a wealth of attractions amidst the wilderness. After breakfast, you'll first get an overview of the Yukon's capital city. This includes, for example, a visit to the restored paddle steamer SS Klondike, located directly on the Yukon River. A short drive then takes us to the Yukon Wildlife Preserve, where we can observe most of the northern wildlife. Animal species in the Yukon include moose, bison, Arctic foxes, and mountain goats. The reserve offers an authentic habitat where the animals thrive and which can be explored on foot along well-maintained trails. Afterwards, we can relax in the nearby hot Takhini Springs and, with a bit of luck, we might have the chance to see the first Northern Lights.

  • Day 3
    Whitehorse – Dawson City

    Hotel

Today's 6-hour leg of the journey takes us along the Klondike Highway to Dawson City, the famous Klondike Gold Rush town. Dawson City was the legendary destination for over 100,000 gold seekers who began the arduous journey in the spring of 1898. Along our route, we'll be constantly reminded of the time 100 years ago by the old post offices, roadhouses, and small towns. You'll also see the mighty Yukon River several times along the way. At nearly 3,200 kilometers, it's one of the longest waterways in North America.

  • Day 5
    Dawson City – Eagle Plains

    Hotel

Four hundred kilometers separate Dawson City from our next destination: Eagle Plain, a service station nestled in the subarctic mountain and tundra landscape. The Dempster Highway follows the traditional trails of the Han and Gwich'in hunters through the Ogilvie Mountains. It also traverses Tombstone Territorial Park, which is particularly striking for its uniquely beautiful scenery and towering, rugged mountains. The park marks the transition between the Arctic tundra and the mountain range inhabited by the Porcupine caribou herd. Arriving in Eagle Plains in the evening, very close to the Arctic Circle, we spend the night in a cozy hotel and, with a bit of luck, are enchanted by the impressive Northern Lights.

  • Day 6
    Eagle Plains – Inuvik

    Hotel

Early in the morning we will cross the Arctic Circle and can take a short break to celebrate the moment. Continuing north, we encounter another mountain range, the Richardson Mountains, then the Arctic coastal landscape, drive through the indigenous community of Fort McPherson, the Tsiigehtchics, and arrive in Inuvik at the end of the day. Inuvik is the center of the Western Arctic and home to the Inuvialuit, in whose language this name means "place of the people." We, too, find our place here for the coming days!

    Inuvik and Aklavik

    Hotel

Dog sledding tour (approx. 2.5 hours) optional

During the winter, Aklavik is connected to Inuvik on the banks of the Mackenzie River by an ice road. Crossing on meter-thick blue ice is certainly a unique experience. Once in Aklavik, we'll explore the area and meet some of the locals who stubbornly cling to life up here in winter. For those seeking even more adventure, a dog sledding tour, the traditional sport of the north, is an optional activity.

Culture / nature

Nature-led

No special athletic abilities are required for this winter trip – most of the program takes place in the vehicle and involves short walks, city tours, and sightseeing. A basic level of fitness and a love of travel are all that's needed. However, you should be aware that it can be very cold in the far north in March; temperatures well below -20°C and strong winds on the Dempster Highway and along the Arctic Ocean are possible. Long days of driving on snow and ice roads require patience and flexibility, as weather and road conditions dictate the schedule. In this small group of 5 to 9 people, team spirit, openness to other cultures, and curiosity about the lives of people in the North are essential. If you're looking for adventure and enjoy a simple, improvisational approach, this is the perfect place for you.
