Overview

With a German-speaking hiking guide you first explore the fjords and glaciers around Seward, then Denali National Park with grizzlies and caribou. Via the Denali Highway and Top of the World Highway you reach Dawson City, with hikes in the Tombstone Mountains and Kluane National Park – and hotels at night.

Alaska and the Yukon on foot: On this hotel hiking trip with a German-speaking hiking guide, you will discover the most beautiful landscapes of the north in a small group – active during the day, comfortable in the hotel in the evening. From Anchorage, the journey first takes you to the coast at Seward with its fjords and glaciers, then on to Denali National Park to see grizzly bears, moose, and caribou. Via the remote Denali Highway and the Top of the World Highway, you reach Dawson City, where the Gold Rush era is still very much alive, and hike in the tundra of the Tombstone Mountains. In Kluane National Park, you'll be treated to glacier views and encounter Dall sheep before a ferry takes you across the Lynn Canal to Skagway. Finally, you'll follow in the footsteps of gold prospectors on the historic Chilkoot Trail before your journey concludes in Whitehorse.

Haines Junction – Haines – Skagway

From the port town of Haines, nestled against the imposing backdrop of the snow-capped Chilkat Mountain Range, a ferry takes you through the dramatic Lynn Canal to Skagway. With a bit of luck, you might spot the adorable sea otters, or perhaps even puffins, sea lions, or even whales. In the evening, Skagway beckons with a visit to one of its historic bars, such as the Red Onion Saloon—a brothel during the Gold Rush—where you can still immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the old gold rush days with live music and a drink.

  • Day 14
    Skagway – Whitehorse

    Hotel

    Chilkoot Trail hike

Skagway, once the gateway to the greatest gold rush of all time! This small port town on the Pacific coast can easily be called an open-air museum of the gold rush era. Almost the entire town, with its nearly 800 inhabitants, is now a protected historical site. Over 100 years ago, most of the gold seekers landed here with their ships from the south, believing they had already reached their dream destination. But the far more arduous part of the journey to the Klondike goldfields was only just beginning. Before even thinking about continuing north on the Yukon River, the infamous Chilkoot Trail had to be conquered, the lower section of which we'll hike today. Today's route takes us along the Klondike Highway towards Whitehorse. First through the coastal mountains and then past Windy Arm. Scenic attractions invite you to make short stops along the way. You'll visit Carcross and the Carcross Desert – the smallest desert in the world – and of course, you'll also be able to admire Emerald Lake. Also called Rainbow Lake by the locals because of its sensational water color.
