Overview

On this canoe tour you paddle far from civilisation through the untouched nature of Swedish Lapland. With a little luck you see moose, reindeer, golden eagles and ospreys; in the evenings campfires and camping create special moments – under the midnight sun at the Arctic Circle. Also suitable for canoe beginners.

Experience relaxation and active recreation far from civilization, nestled in the untouched nature of Swedish Lapland. Observe moose, reindeer, and golden and osprey eagles in their natural habitat and enjoy the unique solitude of these vast landscapes. In the evenings, the romance of a campfire and camping under the stars create unforgettable moments, while you experience the magical atmosphere of the midnight sun at the Arctic Circle. A unique canoe trip through the untouched wilderness of Sweden. The Piteälven, a virtually pristine wilderness river, flows through a breathtaking landscape of Arctic tundra, primeval taiga, and rolling mountains. Sometimes still and mirror-smooth, sometimes wild and rushing – the river reveals many faces. Far from any civilization, amidst vast forests and under the golden midnight sun, you'll immerse yourself in the tranquility of Scandinavia. Only a few people live permanently along this 200-kilometer stretch of river, making this region a true insider tip for those seeking to venture off the beaten track. The wilderness beckons to be explored, and that's precisely what makes this trip so appealing. Your efforts will be richly rewarded: with relaxation, a break from everyday life, spectacular landscapes, and peaceful evenings around a campfire. We rest where it's most beautiful – white sandy beaches invite you to spend the night, campfire romance, crystal-clear lakes, fishing, excursions into the forests and mountains, and nights under the open sky ensure an unforgettable nature experience. This tour is an adventure for all those who want to experience authenticity, freedom, and true wilderness.

Briefing & start of the canoe tour

    Camping

Your adventure begins this morning: you're setting off on a canoe trip! Early in the morning, we'll travel by minibus to the small settlement of Örnvik – above the Arctic Circle, in the heart of the Swedish mountains. Here, at the end of the road, surrounded by rugged primeval forests and fine sandy beaches, your journey on the Piteälven River begins. Before you get into your canoe, you'll receive thorough instruction in paddling techniques and canoe safety, because safety is our top priority. • Days 3–5
    Paddling adventure on the Piteälven

    Camping

You'll paddle southeast on the Piteälven River, immersing yourself in a landscape that could hardly be more pristine. The journey is only occasionally interrupted by portages, which we'll tackle together. When rugged cliffs narrow the riverbed, the usually gentle Piteälven suddenly comes alive: the water gains momentum, creating powerful and impressive rapids. Don't worry, all whitewater sections can be safely portaged. It's precisely these portages, often through trackless terrain, that give the tour its unique character. A particular highlight is Marsifallet – one of the river's most beautiful and impressive rapids. You'll conquer the wilderness yourself, and that's exactly what makes this trip so appealing and adventurous. Your efforts will be richly rewarded: with a break from everyday life, deep relaxation, tranquil moments in breathtaking nature, and unforgettable evenings around the campfire. After an exciting day of paddling, you set up camp right on the riverbank – in the most beautiful spot. White sandy beaches in the heart of Lapland? Surprising, but they're perfect for spending the night. You prepare your meals together over a fire. In the evenings, you sit around the campfire, listen to the stillness of the river, and feel how good it is to simply be outdoors. If you're feeling adventurous, you can explore the surrounding forests, pick berries and mushrooms, or try your luck at fishing. The Piteälven river is known for its abundance of fish – especially grayling and trout thrive in its clear waters. Perhaps you'll be lucky enough to enjoy a freshly caught fish straight from the grill – it doesn't get much more natural than that. Along the way, there are plenty of opportunities to pause, take photos and capture the beauty of the Nordic wilderness – with a camera or simply in your heart.

Culture / nature

Pure nature

This trip is also suitable for canoeing beginners and is ideal for active people with good physical fitness and stamina. Experience from other canoeing or adventure trips is advantageous, but not a requirement.

It's essential that you can swim, as this is mandatory for participation. You can expect a true wilderness adventure with daily paddling distances of approximately 4 to 7 hours. Along the way, there will be sections of whitewater and portages, meaning places where the boats must be carried around rapids.

All whitewater sections can be safely bypassed, but sure-footedness is necessary during the portages, as the terrain is uneven in places. The tour leads far from civilization through the impressive natural landscape of Lapland. Despite the physical activity, the focus is not on athletic ambition, but rather on an intense experience of nature, slowing down, and relaxation amidst the Scandinavian wilderness.

Since we will be traveling for several days, it goes without saying that you will actively participate in daily tasks such as setting up tents, cooking, making fires, and chopping wood. Teamwork and mutual support are an important part of the trip.

Notes on the trip

Notice

Since the outdoor excursions are weather dependent, the program may be changed at short notice due to weather conditions.

Arrival and departure

The nearest airport for your arrival is in Luleå. For organizational reasons, group transfers will be provided at the airport, usually in the afternoon. Therefore, you may have to wait at the airport. If this is the case, we will inform you in advance if possible. The same applies to the return transfer to the airport. Please arrive no later than 7:00 PM on the first day of the tour, as we will be explaining the equipment's functions, discussing the tour itinerary, and checking your personal gear that evening.

Alternative: Arrival by night train

A beautiful and eco-friendly alternative is taking the night train from Stockholm to Älvsbyn. Especially in summer, when the midnight sun shines, you might even spot moose and reindeer along the way. Fly to Stockholm the day before your tour starts and board the night train to Älvsbyn directly from Stockholm-Arlanda Airport in the evening – no changes required, straight to Swedish Lapland. The guesthouse is just a ten-minute walk from the train station. On the night train, you can choose between seats, sleeper berths, or 6-berth compartments (either mixed or gender-segregated). A restaurant car and a wake-up service are also available. For more information and bookings, visit www.sj.se.
