Overview

After an hour’s ferry ride from Tenerife you reach this quiet Canary island. With a hiking guide you walk through mountain villages, into the laurel forest of Garajonay near Las Hayas, to Vallehermoso and up the highest mountain, before descending via switchbacks into Valle Gran Rey.

The second smallest of the Canary Islands provides a magnificent backdrop for your hiking holiday. Fortunately, La Gomera is less well-known and less crowded than its larger neighbors. To get there, you take a slight detour via Tenerife – after an hour's ferry ride, you'll reach this little paradise in the middle of the Atlantic. The slightly longer journey immediately ensures the desired slower pace: If you want to spend your holiday actively yet relaxingly, this is the perfect place. The climate is ideal for hiking. Located about 300 kilometers off the African coast, the island enjoys mild temperatures and plenty of sunshine year-round. At the heart of the almost circular island lies Garajonay National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) with its gnarled, moss-covered laurel trees and giant ferns. The diverse vegetation zones between the coast and the table mountains in the island's interior offer a variety of hiking experiences. Lovers of simple, local cuisine will also find something to their liking: freshly caught fish, grilled vegetables, cheese and hearty meat dishes are served, along with papas arrugadas – potatoes in a salt crust – with mild mojo verde or spicy mojo rosso. Your location is Valle Gran Rey: an impressive mountain backdrop, three beaches, the best climate on the island, and plenty of restaurants, cafes, and bars – yet still untouched by tourist crowds. You'll be staying in the Jardín del Conde apartment complex on the palm-lined waterfront promenade, in spacious apartments with a living room, kitchenette, separate bedroom, bathroom/toilet, and balcony or terrace.

Culture / nature

Pure nature

For this trip, you should be in good physical condition and have sure footing. You can expect moderately difficult hikes with walking times of 3 to 5 hours, some involving significant elevation changes: long ascents and descents of up to +650 or -900 meters in a single day are possible. A head for heights is required in some sections. The trails are generally well-maintained, but often rocky and steep, especially on the switchback descents into the valleys. You can skip individual hikes if needed.

You'll be staying in the same apartment complex all week and hiking with just a light daypack. Well-broken-in hiking boots with good tread, hiking poles for the descents, rain and wind protection for the often foggy national park, and sunscreen should be in your pack.
