Overview

The Azores lie on the migration routes of many whale species and are among the best places in the world for whale watching. On this tour you head out to the open sea several times and explore Sete Cidades, the hot springs of Furnas, Lagoa do Fogo, a tea plantation and the volcanic landscapes of Pico and Faial on land.

Immerse yourself in the natural paradise of the Azores and let the rugged, unspoilt charm of this archipelago in the middle of the Atlantic enchant you. On this 15-day round trip, whales and dolphins are at the heart of your adventure – because hardly anywhere in the world brings you as close to these fascinating giants of the sea as the Azores. The archipelago lies on the major migration routes of numerous whale species and is considered one of the best places in the world for unforgettable whale watching. Whether out at sea or on land: you get to know these impressive marine mammals and their eventful history, and learn how the Azores developed from a centre of whaling into a pioneer of whale conservation. These encounters get under your skin and make the deep connection between people and the ocean tangible. But away from the water, too, countless highlights await you on the islands of São Miguel, Pico and Faial. Mighty volcanic landscapes, steaming hot springs and mysterious crater lakes shape the scenery and never cease to amaze. You hike through lush, almost tropical-looking nature parks, reach the legendary lakes of Sete Cidades or explore the imposing Gruta das Torres lava cave. If you're looking for a special adrenaline rush, you can even attempt the climb up Pico. At 2,351 metres it is not only the highest mountain in the Azores but in all of Portugal – and it rewards you with a view you will never forget. With a rental car you are flexible and can reach all the sights and the starting points of your hikes in a relaxed way. Thanks to the mild island climate, pleasant temperatures await you all year round. One thing is certain: in the Azores you experience nature in its most beautiful, most powerful form – and as a whale and dolphin lover, you'll get your money's worth here.

Afterwards, in idyllic Caldeira Velha, you can enjoy a swim in the warm water of the natural pool right at the foot of a small waterfall – pure relaxation amid tropical vegetation. Near the geothermal power station in the "hot" Caldeiras area, a hike to the Salto do Cabrito waterfall is also recommended, an impressive spectacle of water and natural power. To crown the day, a tea tasting at Europe's only tea plantations awaits you, before stopping on the way back in Ribeira Grande, the island's second-largest town on the north coast. Here you can stroll through the charming lanes and experience island life up close.

You can make a detour to the old whaling factory in Cais do Pico or visit the Whalers' Museum in Lajes do Pico. Here you learn all about the centuries-long importance of whaling for the islanders. For decades whaling was Pico's most important source of income – today the gentle giants are only approached with camera and binoculars, as Pico is one of the best places in the world for unforgettable whale-watching trips.

Lajes do Pico & Cais do Pico

In Lajes do Pico numerous reminders of the whaling era await you: the Whalers' Museum, the former whaling factory and a whale lookout tower tell of the islanders' long connection with the marine mammals. In the afternoon you drive across the centre of the island to the former whaling factory at Cais do Pico in São Roque. With an area of 1,200 square metres, it was the largest and most important whale-processing facility in the Azores. Founded in 1949, the factory operated for 35 years. In the early 1990s the building was restored and converted into a museum, which today gives every visitor an impressive journey back in time to this chapter of Azorean history. On the plateau, a detour to the numerous crater lakes surrounded by unique endemic plant life is also worthwhile. Here you can discover, among other things, the last specimens of Erica azorica, a plant found only in the Azores – a botanical highlight that shows Pico from a completely different side.

Ferry from Pico to Faial / Horta

    Guesthouse

Your island hopping in the Azores continues today to the neighbouring island of Faial. After the ferry crossing you pick up your rental car at the port and drive to your accommodation on the island's south coast. Faial is also called the "Blue Island", because in summer countless hydrangeas bloom here in intense shades of blue, giving the island an unmistakable charm. The island captivates with beautiful coastlines, wildly romantic landscapes and the imposing Cabeço Gordo, 1,043 metres high. Use the time to explore the town of Horta, the unofficial capital of the Azores. Its important marina is a key meeting point for ocean sailors, and the colourfully painted harbour walls are a real photo opportunity. In the Porto Pim district, a beautiful sandy beach awaits you right next to the old whaling factory, whose visit offers an exciting insight into the island's maritime history. In this way, Faial combines nature, culture and history in a unique way.

    Notes on the trip

    Whale watching in the Azores

The Azores are a hotspot for whale watching, as the waters around the islands are ideal for both migrating and resident whale species. Protecting the animals and the marine ecosystem is a top priority in the Azores. Whale-watching operators must comply with strict regulations so as not to disturb the animals. There are fixed distances that boats must keep from the animals so as not to harass the whales and dolphins. The tours are accompanied by experienced guides and biologists who not only explain the animals' behaviour but also raise awareness about protecting the marine environment. Before setting out, there is a detailed briefing for all participants that introduces the various species you may be lucky enough to see and also explains the ecosystem. There is also a safety briefing. The best months for whale watching are May to October, with spring and summer being particularly good for seeing different whale species. Sperm whales are present in the waters all year round, while other species appear seasonally. The whales and dolphins of the Azores live wild and undisturbed in the waters around the islands, so their movements and behaviour are unpredictable. This means that while a whale-watching trip is promising, there is always some uncertainty as to whether and which species you will see. That makes the moments when you do encounter these majestic animals all the more precious.

    Flexible travel planning

If you would like to help shape the itinerary of your hiking trip in the Azores, we are happy to take your personal wishes into account. This self-drive tour can be booked in two accommodation categories, which can also be combined. Itinerary, duration and accommodation can be tailored to your wishes.

    Notes

You pick up your rental car at the airport or ferry port on each island. Ferry crossings between the islands are not included. Ferry tickets can easily be bought locally and do not need to be booked in advance.

Notice pursuant to EU Directive 2015/2302:

This trip is not suitable for people with reduced mobility.
