Overview
In the Aosta Valley, numerous castles bear witness to an eventful history, and French is still an official language alongside Italian. On five guided hikes you walk through larch and chestnut forests, along vineyards and across alpine meadows – all the way to the Cogne valley.
The lush meadows and high mountains were settled by Celts before the Romans conquered the region. Numerous castles and fortresses scattered throughout the Aosta Valley still bear witness to its eventful history. But history is reflected not only in the buildings. French remains an official language alongside Italian. Hiking in the Aosta Valley is a true experience for nature lovers. The trails are lined with larch, Swiss pine, and chestnut trees. Or we walk along vineyards and colorful alpine meadows. This small region is incredibly diverse. During our Aosta Valley hiking trip, we will explore the eastern part (Gressoney Valley), the region around the capital city of Aosta, and the Gran Paradiso Nature Park on five guided tours. The tours take place at altitudes between 1,000 and 2,000 meters. Even gourmets will find plenty to enjoy while hiking in the Aosta Valley. Here, sheltered by the Alpine massifs, not only do rare grape varieties thrive, but the alpine meadows also boast a unique array of herbs that lend a distinctive flavor to many of the region's specialties. The food is a symbol of the hospitality and conviviality of Italy's smallest region, which is particularly renowned for its dairy products, baked goods, cured meats, and fruit.

Day 7
Cogne Valley & Lillaz Waterfalls
Family-run hotel in the Aosta Valley
Approx. walking time 4.5 hours, ascent 500 m, descent 500 m
Finally, we'll discover another part of the Aosta Valley. We'll head south into one of the region's most beautiful valleys. The Cogne Valley is initially narrow, but later opens up into a high plateau, at the heart of which lies the town of the same name (over 1,500 m above sea level). From here, after our hike, we'll enjoy a fantastic view of the snow-capped mountains of Gran Paradiso National Park (highest peak 4,061 m) while sipping delicious local wine or enjoying a cold beer. But first, the gods have decreed sweat. So, we'll embark on a hike. Waterfalls always hold a special fascination for us humans. That's why we're hiking to one today. We start in the village of Cogne and follow the small Urtier River to the village of Lillaz. We soon reach the first cascade of waterfalls. Now the path becomes a bit steeper as we approach the second cascade. Here, the mountain stream plunges thunderously into a pool. It's a wonderful place to linger. If you like, you can dip your feet in the cool water. A delightful refreshment! We then return to Cogne along a pleasant path with wonderful views of the valley. To round off the trip, there's time for a delicious aperitivo. A notice: We hike in the mountains at altitudes of up to 2,000 meters. Should the situation require it, we will adjust the hikes accordingly, also to ensure everyone's safety.
