Overview

From Tourmakeady on Lough Mask you hike along the Partry Mountains, through Cong Forest and a raised bog, on Achill Island and in Connemara National Park – in the landscape that inspired Heinrich Böll’s “Irish Journal”. Plus an excursion to Galway.

Ireland's diverse natural landscape makes it a perfect destination for novice hikers. Our route begins in the small village of Tourmakeady, situated directly on the shores of Lough Mask – one of Ireland's largest lakes. From here, we'll explore the west of the Emerald Isle step by step. Gentle paths lead us along the impressive Partry Mountains, where we'll experience a landscape that inspired the writer Heinrich Böll to write his "Irish Diary." We traverse a region where rugged mountains alternate with expansive lakes, and finally climb the most famous viewpoint in Connemara National Park. From the top, a magnificent panorama unfolds: the Atlantic Ocean, offshore islands, and the craggy coastline lie at our feet. In the evening we immerse ourselves in the Irish way of life: In the quaint pubs of the west we review our experiences, enjoy a freshly poured Guinness and listen – with a bit of luck – to the sounds of traditional folk music.
