Overview

The Lemosho Route is considered the most beautiful and unspoilt route up Kilimanjaro. It starts in the west and leads through rainforest, moorland and heath across the Shira Plateau and Barranco to Barafu Camp. Its longer duration ensures good acclimatisation; you descend via the Mweka Route.

For centuries, Mount Kilimanjaro has captivated people from all over the world. It rises majestically from the endless African savannah. At 5,895 meters, it is the world's highest freestanding mountain. For many mountaineers, it is a dream peak, and UNESCO has designated it a World Heritage Site. The Lemosho Route is often described as the most beautiful and pristine route up Kilimanjaro. It is less crowded than other routes. The descent follows the Mweka Route. This gives you the opportunity to experience two different routes. During the ascent, you can enjoy views towards Kenya and the neighboring Mount Meru. The first two days are along forest trails, allowing you to experience the unique landscape up close. The relatively moderate climb to the Shira Plateau leads through green moorland. The Lava Tower and the Great Barranco Wall require not only sure-footedness but also a good level of fitness. From the very beginning, stick to the friendly "Pole Pole" (Slowly, Slowly) of your guides, and you have a very good chance of reaching the summit, even without mountaineering skills!

  • Differences compared to the other routes

The Lemosho Route offers a quiet, less-traveled alternative to other routes. The trail features a varied elevation profile, ranging from rainforests to rocky summit regions. Thanks to the gradual ascent, it allows for good acclimatization, increasing the success rate. Two separate routes for the ascent and descent add variety. There are rocky sections that require sure footing, and the route is relatively long, taking 7-8 days. The starting point is somewhat farther away, requiring a longer journey.

Culture / nature

Pure nature

The Lemosho Route is considered one of the most beautiful and varied routes on Kilimanjaro. It begins in the west of the mountain massif and leads through lush rainforest, moorland, and heathland to the vast high plateaus and finally to the snow-capped Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). Thanks to its longer duration (7–8 days), it offers excellent acclimatization and thus a high chance of reaching the summit.

Daily hiking times average 6–8 hours, increasing to 12–14 hours on summit day. Technically, the route is not difficult, but it requires very good physical condition, sure-footedness, altitude tolerance, and stamina.

This route is ideal for mountain hikers who are prepared to spend several days at high altitude and want to experience Kilimanjaro on a quiet, particularly scenic route.

Notes on the trip

Weather Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro can be climbed year-round, but the best time to visit is during January, February, and early March. Visibility on the mountain is particularly good during this period. From late March to May, however, it is the rainy season in Tanzania, characterized by overcast skies and snowfall in the higher regions of Kilimanjaro. In June and July, hikers can expect mostly clear skies and cold nights, while August, September, and October are the warmest and most sought-after months. October, November, and December may see clouds and brief thunderstorms, and snow at higher elevations – a breathtaking setting that promises a white Christmas at the highest point in Africa.
