At 7:30 am you depart from Arusha for Tarangire National Park. Here you'll experience your first safari. The national park, established in 1970 from a former hunting reserve, is particularly impressive during the dry season when the numerous animals gather along the Tarangire River. It's not uncommon to see herds of up to 300 elephants here. Tarangire National Park is home to the largest animal population outside the Serengeti ecosystem. The park has become famous for sightings of lions climbing trees. This behavior is quite unusual for lions, but it can now be observed in other parks as well. Of course, seeing big cats, and especially spotting lions in a tree, generally requires a good deal of luck.
