Overview
The Inca Trail is one of the most legendary hiking trails in the world. For four days, you follow the original Inca steps through valleys and cloud forests, cross passes over 4,200 meters high, and discover ruins like Runkurakay, Phuyupatamarka, and Wiñay Wayna. Finally, you glimpse Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate.
The Short Inca Trail is the perfect choice for travelers who want to experience the magic of the classic trek in just two days. Starting at Km 104, the route skips the high mountain passes of the four-day trek and leads through lush Andean cloud forest to the most famous archaeological sites along the way. One of the highlights is Wiñay Wayna, widely considered the most impressive site of the entire Inca Trail network. Unlike day visitors arriving by bus, you hike through the legendary Sun Gate to Machu Picchu on your very first day – a moment you will remember long after your trip. From private transport to the current permit deadlines, we take care of every detail in line with the latest Machu Picchu regulations – so you can focus entirely on the trail.

Itinerary
Day 1
The Royal Route – Km 104 to the Sun Gate
Hotel Pucara, Aguas Calientes
13 km / 8.1 mi · 6–7 h · 670 m / 2,198 ft elevation gain
Your adventure begins at 5:30 am with a private transfer from your hotel in Cusco to the train station in Ollantaytambo. A scenic train ride takes you to Km 104 (2,050 m / 6,726 ft), where we cross the Urubamba River and set foot on the Inca Trail. From here, we climb for about three hours through subtropical cloud forest to Wiñay Wayna (2,650 m / 8,694 ft), where your guide explains the history of these "forever young" terraces and buildings. After a picnic lunch, a one-hour hike brings us to the Sun Gate, Inti Punku (2,720 m / 8,924 ft) – the only point along the trail with a complete panoramic view of Machu Picchu, especially beautiful when the afternoon shadows lengthen over the ruins. After photos at the classic viewpoint, we take the shuttle bus down to Aguas Calientes (2,040 m / 6,693 ft) for a celebratory dinner and an overnight stay at Hotel Pucara. Today you cover 13 km (8.1 mi) in 6–7 hours of hiking and reach a maximum altitude of 2,720 m (8,924 ft).
