Overview
This trek takes you off the beaten track to one of Peru's most mysterious Inca sites. Few travelers make it here: you can expect imposing ruins, spectacular views over the Apurímac Canyon, changing vegetation zones, and, with a bit of luck, the flight of Andean condors.
Choquequirao is one of the most impressive Inca sites in Peru – and one of the least visited. Perched high above the Apurímac Canyon, the “sister city” of Machu Picchu can only be reached on foot, which makes this trek a true adventure off the beaten path. From Capuliyoc, the trail descends deep into the canyon of the Apurímac, the “talking god” of the Quechua, and climbs up the other side through changing vegetation with orchids and a rich birdlife – with a good chance of seeing Andean condors. You explore Choquequirao on the second afternoon and return via the same route. Horses carry the equipment, our chef cooks fresh meals and you sleep in comfortable tents. We travel in small groups of up to 12 people with experienced local guides.
