Day 8
Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco
2 nights in Cusco
Today you can look forward to a true highlight of your tour! Early this morning, we'll set off for one of the New Seven Wonders of the World: the former Inca city of Machu Picchu (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). To this day, countless mysteries and myths surround the origins of this treasure. The lost Inca city was never discovered by the Spanish and seemed to have been forgotten for centuries until it was rediscovered, rather by chance, by Hiram Bingham in 1911. Enjoy this impressive and majestic place and soak up the mystical atmosphere amidst the imposing mountain panorama. If you have a head for heights, the hike along the sometimes steep rock faces to the Inca bridge is highly recommended – the narrow bridge offers an unparalleled view. Please note: Due to legal regulations, the entry time to Machu Picchu is limited to 2.5 hours. Visitors are distributed across different routes to coordinate visitor flow and protect the ruins. Optionally, you can climb Huayna Picchu, the highest mountain in the complex, on this day. The ascent involves some steep stairs and around 1,600 steps and is challenging; good physical condition and a head for heights are essential. Tickets are limited to 200 per day and must be booked in advance (€90 per person, bookable when registering). Afterwards, the journey continues by train and bus back through the Sacred Valley to Cusco. (F)

There, giant cacti reach for the sky, offering a spectacular contrast to the endless white expanse. After a lunch break, we continue to the mystical salt mounds and the Salt Museum, which is built from blocks of salt. To conclude the day, you'll visit the Galaxy Caves, underwater caves formed by a volcanic eruption. Their bizarre rock formations, along with ancient stalactites and stalagmites, create an otherworldly atmosphere. (F/M/A)
