Day 4
Out and about in Harlem

Today you'll take the subway to northern Manhattan to explore Harlem. This predominantly African-American neighborhood is known for its gospel choirs and jazz music. There, you'll embark on a Harlem Gospel Tour, beginning with a stroll along 125th Street. You'll see the mural by Franco the Great, a renowned Harlem street artist. Your tour then takes you to a Baptist church, where, with a bit of luck, you might hear a gospel choir perform live. Let the choir's positive energy sweep you away and forget the hustle and bustle of New York for a moment. The music is meant to convey a good message. Afterward, you'll wander past the Apollo Theater, a hub for musical performances in Harlem (exterior view only). It's where Michael Jackson, for example, launched his career. 138th Street will lead you past the Abyssinian Church to the Hamilton Grange Museum. Here, you'll learn about what Harlem looked like in the 18th and 19th centuries. The museum was also the home of Hamilton Grange, one of the Founding Fathers of the USA. After your gospel tour, you can spend the rest of the day as you wish. Ask your tour guide for recommendations. (F) (on foot: approx. 5 km)
