Overview
This snowshoe tour takes you into the Vindelfjällen nature reserve, one of Europe's most beautiful natural areas. You follow the Vindel River through birch forests and wide fell landscapes. No previous experience is needed – the focus is on silence, winter light and experiencing nature.
This snowshoe tour in the Vindelfjällen Nature Reserve in Lapland leads you into pristine mountain landscapes and one of the most beautiful natural areas in Europe. You'll immerse yourself in a world of snow and ice, whose unparalleled tranquility soothes the soul. The silence and the special winter light will captivate you and linger long after your trip. We follow the course of the Vindelälven River, which has shaped the region for millennia and gave its name to Europe's largest nature reserve. The landscape is diverse: pristine birch forests, high mountains above the tree line, rugged peaks, rushing rapids, and vast lakes and wetlands. With a bit of luck, you might spot rare animals – brown bears, lynx, wolverines, and Arctic foxes are all native to this area. The nights are clear and dark, offering excellent chances of seeing the Northern Lights. The tour includes a day hike to a high plateau with spectacular views of other mountain peaks. Overnight stays are in cozy mountain huts, allowing you to experience the winter wonderland of Vindelfjällen up close – the perfect combination of nature, tranquility, and a sense of adventure.

Day 2
Älvsbyn - Ammarnäs - Rävfallet
hut
Hiking distance approx. 16 km
We start early in the morning in Älvsbyn and head towards Ammarnäs, a small, traditional Sami village on the edge of the impressive Vindelfjällen Nature Reserve. Here your snowshoe adventure begins, right in the heart of one of Europe's largest wilderness regions. Over the next five days, you'll leave everyday life behind and immerse yourself in the tranquil, expansive landscape of Lapland. Our route follows the Vindelälven River, past snow-covered valleys and light birch forests. The daily stages, ranging from 9 to 16 kilometers, are intentionally designed to allow ample time for leisurely hiking, soaking up nature, taking photos, or simply pausing to reflect. Your luggage will be transported in traditional pulkas – the Scandinavian sleds – while you carry only the essentials in a light daypack. After a short introduction, you'll quickly realize how easy and straightforward snowshoeing is. Our first leg takes us along the sparkling river and through pristine birch forest to the Rävfallet cabin. Here we spend the first two nights – a cozy retreat in the heart of the wilderness, perfect for arriving, gazing out over the snow-covered landscape, and letting the tranquility of Lapland wash over you.

Day 3
Day trip in the Vindelfjällen Nature Reserve
hut
Hiking distance approx. 10 km
Today's plan is a varied day hike – without a pulka, just your light daypack. The trail leads you gently uphill through a quiet birch forest. As soon as we reach the tree line, a breathtaking view opens up across the vast fell landscapes of the Vindelfjäll Nature Reserve and the Vindelälven valley. With a bit of luck, you might discover traces of local wildlife in the snow – perhaps of ptarmigan, moose, snow hares or even a shy wolverine. Back at the cozy Rävfallet cabin, a warming soup awaits you before you unwind in the cabin sauna. A day filled with nature experiences, fresh air, and soothing tranquility – just what you need to recharge your body and mind.

Day 4
The Fox's Fall - Vitnjul
hut
Hiking distance approx. 9 km
Today's hike takes us to the rustic log cabin Vitnjul. The trail leads mostly through a pristine birch forest – quiet, snowy, and peaceful. After a few hours, we finally reach the cabin, beautifully situated by the river. Enjoy the view of the snow-covered mountains all around. Since it's only a short stage, there's plenty of time for good conversation, reflection, or preparing dinner together. For everyone celebrating New Year's Eve, a very special evening awaits: We'll be grilling elk or reindeer meat, accompanied by typical regional side dishes – and perhaps a glass of wine. We'll let the old year fade away peacefully and hopefully shorten the wait for midnight with a glimpse of the dancing Northern Lights. Then the new year will knock on the door – we'll greet it in a relaxed manner, full of good wishes and with great anticipation for everything that's to come.

Notes on the trip
Arrival and departure
The nearest airport is in Luleå. Please arrive by 7:00 PM, as we will be explaining the function of the equipment (snowshoes, pulka, etc.), discussing the tour itinerary, and checking your personal equipment on the evening of your arrival day. An alternative to flying is taking the train. You can board the train directly at Stockholm-Arlanda Airport and travel to Älvsbyn. Timetable information is available at www.sj.se or from us. Booking is done independently.
Mountain huts
During this tour, overnight stays are in mountain huts in shared rooms. Blankets and pillows are provided in the huts. Sleeping bags are also provided. The huts have a communal kitchen and a typical outhouse (utedass). If you'd like to try winter camping, you can also stay overnight in a tent at the hut on this tour. This way, you can enjoy the comfort of a hut-to-hut tour while saving on accommodation costs. However, you'll need to transport a bit more luggage in your pulka (sled): a tent (for two people), a thicker and warmer sleeping bag, and a lightweight sleeping mat. Further details are available upon request.
