    Reykjavik - Landmannalaugar - Hrafntinnusker

    Mountain hut

Hiking distance approx. 12 km, approx. 4-5 hours, ascent 470 m

Your adventure begins early in the morning with a bus ride from Reykjavík to Landmannalaugar – the starting point of your unforgettable trek. Together, we'll take the public bus that travels this remote mountain route during the summer months. The journey itself is an experience: it takes you past the infamous Hekla volcano and through the breathtaking landscape surrounding the Dómadalur Valley. Departure is at 6:30 a.m. from the BSÍ Bus Station in Reykjavík – so getting up early is definitely worth it! Arriving in Landmannalaugar, we'll fortify ourselves with lunch before beginning our hike. From here on, we'll continue on foot – into the rugged mountains of South Iceland. The first leg of the journey takes you through a landscape that seems otherworldly: past small gorges, steaming hot springs, and bright yellow ridges of rhyolite rock. In the late afternoon, we'll finally reach the Hrafntinnusker hut, our first overnight stop high in the Icelandic highlands. Here, we'll relax and recharge for the next stages of the trek.

  • Day 3
    Hvanngil – Emstrur (Botnar)

    Mountain hut

Hiking distance approx. 12 km, approx. 6 hours, ascent: 100 m

The next day, we leave the green oasis of Hvanngil behind and continue our hike southwards – into the vast, mystical landscape of the black deserts of Mælifellssandur. The contrast could hardly be greater: black sand, endless expanses, and the quiet, rugged beauty of the Icelandic highlands accompany you on this section. Our path leads us onward to the ancient, moss-covered volcano Hattfell, a striking landmark in this barren landscape. Shortly afterwards, we reach the Emstrur region – an area once used by farmers as summer pastures for their sheep. Even today, one can still sense something of the unspoiled nature and tranquility of bygone days. Before we reach the Botnar mountain hut, our accommodation for the night, a real highlight awaits you: the impressive Markarfljót Gorge. The river has carved its way almost 200 meters deep into the rock here – a spectacular sight that impressively demonstrates the raw power of Icelandic nature. Once at the hut, you can relax and unwind, looking forward to the final leg of your trek.

    Notes on the trip

    Before the trip

Please make sure you are well prepared – you will receive a detailed packing list before the trip.

    Requirements

The Laugavegur trail is an impressive but also demanding trekking route – especially in the changeable weather that is more the rule than the exception in Iceland. Even in the height of summer, you have to be prepared for sudden snowfall, dense fog, and strong winds. These conditions can be challenging even for experienced hikers. Cold and wet weather combined with wind increases the risk of hypothermia – therefore, being well-prepared is essential. You should be in good physical condition, as you'll be hiking for 4 to 7 hours daily – carrying a daypack (approx. 25–40 liters) containing the essentials. Sturdy, ankle-high hiking boots with good tread are mandatory, as is weatherproof and breathable clothing. You'll receive a complete packing list before the trip to ensure you're prepared for all conditions.

    Accommodation

During the trekking tour, you will spend four nights in simple mountain huts specifically designed for hikers in the highlands. Accommodation is in shared rooms with bunk beds or similar furnishings. Sanitary facilities are communal, and some huts do not have running water. However, all huts are heated, and some offer hot water and showers (for a fee, payable locally). Please note that you must bring your own sleeping bag – alternatively, you can rent one on site for a fee (please register with us beforehand). The cabins have kitchen and cooking utensils, but no electricity. Therefore, we recommend that you bring a power bank or spare batteries for your electronic devices.
