Itinerary

  • Day 1
    Reykjavik

    Hotel Klettur (or similar)

Welcome to Iceland! The world's northernmost capital, Reykjavik, lies just below the Arctic Circle. In winter, you'll get around four hours of sunlight a day, while in summer this can increase to 22 hours or more. Surrounded by volcanic peaks and crystal-clear seas, Reykjavik offers a fascinating contrast with its vibrant arts and nightlife scene. So why not arrive early and visit the National Museum, which traces Iceland's history from the first Vikings who arrived and settled from mainland Scandinavia in the 9th century to the present day? Or join the locals at the Laugardalslaug Geothermal Pool, where they relax, chat, and enjoy the soothing warmth. Your adventure begins today with a welcome meeting at 6 pm. If you can't find a flight that arrives in time, we recommend arriving a day earlier. We'd be happy to book additional accommodation for you so you can start your adventure relaxed.

  • Day 2
    Golden Circle - Hvolsvollur Area

    Guesthouse

Travel time: approx. 4 hours. Distance: approx. 250 km.

In the morning, we leave Reykjavik and set off along the famous Golden Circle route. Our first stop is Thingvellir National Park, which is not only historically significant – the first Icelandic parliament was founded here in 930 AD – but also a true geological wonder. Here, the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are pulling apart. If you spot a large water-filled trench in the landscape, it's likely the Silfra fissure, which offers a unique view of the Earth's cracks. Next, we'll visit the Geysir geothermal area, where the famous Strokkur geyser regularly erupts impressive jets of water up to 30 meters into the air. Afterwards, we'll travel to Gullfoss waterfall, also known as the "Golden Waterfall," whose imposing cascades are sure to captivate you. After these breathtaking natural wonders, we drive to the Hvolsvollur Valley, where we spend the night in a converted Icelandic farmhouse that now serves as a guesthouse. Away from the city lights, the guesthouse offers the perfect location for viewing the Northern Lights. If the sky is clear, you can take a walk in the snowy landscape and scan the heavens for the dancing green lights. Special information: Please note that while there's a good chance of seeing the Northern Lights this far north, it's not guaranteed, as they are a natural phenomenon and depend on weather conditions and auroral activity. There are apps that show you current and predicted auroral activity worldwide. Some of these apps will even notify you when the Northern Lights become visible in your area. Remember to pack warm clothing, as temperatures here can drop below -5°C.

  • Day 3
South Coast - Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon

    Guesthouse

Travel time: approx. 5 hours. Distance: approx. 350 km.

We begin the day with a trip to the impressive Skógafoss, one of the largest waterfalls in Iceland. Skógafoss is a gigantic waterfall, 25 meters wide and 60 meters deep, and you'll be able to feel its immense power up close. If you're feeling adventurous, you can climb a long, winding staircase that leads to a breathtaking viewpoint. On sunny days, you have the chance to see a rainbow in the waterfall's spray, making this place even more magical. Afterwards, the journey continues along Iceland's south coast, where you'll discover more of the country's impressive natural wonders. You'll see the striking rock formations of Reynisdrangar, the Dyrhólaey peninsula, and the jet-black sand beach of Reynisfjara, which make this region one of Iceland's most breathtaking. Along the way, you'll pass the lava fields left behind by the devastating Laki eruption of 1782-1783, which profoundly shaped the landscape. In the afternoon you will experience the famous Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, a breathtaking sea of floating icebergs. The bright blue of the icebergs contrasts sharply with the black sand beach, creating an almost surreal atmosphere. We will be spending the night on a farm on the south coast. Weather permitting, there will be another opportunity this evening to experience the fascinating natural phenomenon of the Northern Lights and admire the dancing green lights in the sky.

  • Day 4
    Vatnajökull Glacier - Vik

    Guesthouse

    Glacier hike

Travel time: approx. 3.5 hours. Distance: approx. 250 km

Today we're heading to Vatnajökull, Europe's largest ice cap, from which around 30 glaciers flow. No prior experience is necessary to participate in the hike – you'll be equipped with everything you need to safely and well-prepared ascend to the glacier tongue. It's an awe-inspiring feeling to walk on the vast, eternal ice, especially considering that the glacier is retreating due to rising global temperatures and may disappear entirely in the coming years. However, if you don't wish to participate in the hike, you can simply stroll to the glacier tongue or return to the glacial lagoons at Jökulsárlón or Fjallsárlón, which also offer spectacular views. For those who prefer a more relaxed morning, there is also the option of exploring the area around the farm or taking a trip to the Thorbergur Centre, where you can learn more about the local culture and history. Later in the day, we continue to the coastal town of Vik, famous for its black sand beach. With the sea on one side and high cliffs on the other, this dramatically situated, picturesque village is the southernmost mainland settlement in Iceland. The place will definitely captivate you with its unique atmosphere and breathtaking views. Special information: Please note that the glacier hike is dependent on current weather conditions. Ankle-high boots are required to attach crampons and walk safely on the glacier.

    Notes on the trip

    Packing list / Equipment recommendation

For your trip to Iceland, you should bring a daypack or hiking backpack (approx. 30 liters) to safely store everything you need for day trips. You can transport your main luggage in a large travel bag (possibly with wheels or a carrying system) or a backpack – a soft-sided suitcase is recommended, as hard-sided suitcases are heavier to pack and less flexible. Regarding clothing, hiking boots (Gore-Tex, ankle-high) are absolutely essential. These should be waterproof and well broken in to provide secure footing on snow or ice. Hiking or outdoor trousers made of lightweight, quick-drying material are ideal, especially if they can be zipped off to allow for flexibility depending on the weather. A windproof/waterproof jacket with a hood is also indispensable, as the weather in Iceland can change rapidly. Windproof and waterproof trousers should also be included in your pack. For the low temperatures in Iceland during winter, you'll need winter clothing, including functional or thermal underwear, gloves (or mittens), a hat, and sunglasses – primarily to protect yourself from the blinding sun, which can reflect off the snow and ice. Since you'll also be hiking on a glacier, you'll need ankle-high boots for glacier travel so that crampons can be securely attached. For added security on your hike, you can also bring waterproof covers for your backpack to protect it from rain. If you're going to the Blue Lagoon or another geothermal bath, don't forget your swimwear. Other small extras like a camera or your smartphone are useful for capturing the spectacular scenery. Snacks are also handy, especially on longer hikes. Since Iceland can often get very cold in the winter months – especially on the glaciers and in the highlands – it is important that you bring enough warm, insulating clothing to protect you from wind, rain and cold.

    Notes

The Northern Lights (also known as Aurora Borealis or Polar Lights) are a fascinating natural phenomenon that creates colorful light across the night sky of the Northern Hemisphere. While seeing the Northern Lights can never be guaranteed, Iceland's geographical location makes it one of the best destinations to witness this impressive spectacle. The likelihood of seeing them is particularly high at high latitudes like Iceland. However, please note that visibility depends on weather conditions and solar wind activity. Clear skies and high solar wind activity significantly increase your chances. Numerous apps are available that show you the current and predicted activity of the Northern Lights worldwide. Some of these apps even offer a notification feature that informs you when the Northern Lights are visible in your current location. Iceland is a beautiful but relatively expensive travel destination, especially when it comes to food and drink. From museum entrance fees to the cost of a simple café, Iceland can quickly strain your budget, particularly if you eat out regularly. Your tour guide will be happy to give you tips on how to save money. In remote areas, the only option for dinner is the guesthouse where you're staying. If you prefer to be self-sufficient, you can stock up on supplies at a local supermarket before you arrive. Iceland can get extremely cold at this time of year, with temperatures dropping well below freezing. Therefore, it's essential to pack appropriate winter clothing for unfavorable and changeable weather conditions. This includes warm, windproof, and waterproof jackets, thermal underwear, gloves, hats, and well-insulated shoes. Since the weather in Iceland can change very quickly, you should be prepared for all eventualities. In rare cases, the tour guide may need to change the itinerary or activities at short notice due to weather conditions. Should this be necessary, a suitable alternative will be offered so that you can still get the most out of your trip. So be flexible and don't let unpredictable weather discourage you – Iceland is a unique adventure in every season!
